Brooches: major players in 2019

Brooches: major players in 2019

During the Autumn-Winter 2018/2019 fashion shows, the lion’s share of accessories was taken by brooches.
These highly original, extraordinary, luxurious and ancient items are making a comeback on the catwalks and in the world’s coolest streets, for men and women alike.

On the other hand, the brooch is a decidedly glam jewel that is both useful and decorative. In fact, during the course of history, besides being a simple ornament, it had a large number of functions, like holding the edges of a cape together or closing dress sleeves.

The amazing specimens produced in the 1900s by brands like Cartier or Van Cleef & Arpels embellished the panorama of this perfect accessory to further enrich dresses in the early ‘20s.

And nowadays? Brooches have become more than a simple decoration: they enhance scarves, bags and dresses, jackets and even necklaces.
As in the proposals from Louis Vuitton, whose golden filigree brooches hold the edges of a waistcoat together, creating retro clothes, while the bow-shaped brooch with flowers, diamonds and pearls, acts as a delicate and luxurious tribute to Liberty jewellery in a contemporary key.

And while on the catwalk, Michael Kors proposed brooches in the shape of a butterfly inserted into a pearl necklace to recall the eighteenth-century custom when chokers were enriched with brooches and cameos by way of gems, Gucci offered them in animal shapes in a variety of bright colours on jackets and scarves.

In high jewellery, Damiani, Crivelli, DeGrisogono and Swarovski chose to give brooches animal and floral shapes with precious stones in eye-catching colours, while Pasquale Bruni astounded with its Ton Joli brooch, which, accompanied by its velvet collar, becomes a choker.

Going back to the fashion world, Alexander McQueen has even launched a dress entirely covered in brooches and rhinestones, and Marc Jacobs has surprised with a enchanting brooch-foulard, producing a jaw-dropping, exclusive and unique accessory.
